It’s still waters and the nameless small island, create a wonderful collage of colors around which the entire area lives and breathes. Ioannina was always multicultural, dominated mainly by Christian, Islamic and Jewish influences.
This coexistence of cultural influences is clearly evident in the historic city center. Wonderful buildings like the House Matei Hussein, the Ottoman mosque of Veli Pasha and the entire historic center of the town are unique attractions. Visit the castle of Ioannina that is located in the southeastern part of the city, on a rocky peninsula on lake Pamvotis. Its current form dates back to the late Ottoman period, with many elements of the earlier Byzantine fortification which is based on a fortress from the Hellenistic period. In the castle you can visit 3 of the most important museums of Ioannina.
